SCHOOL PRIDE

Sunlit lemon on
yellow legal pad.

Can’t walk, run, crawl or hop,
can’t fly or swim.

There is not so much
to recommend him.

Yet young coeds
comply with tradition,

fearless of any
strange skin condition.

On the forest floor,
under giant trees,

he moves slowly and
is oblivious,

to the soft sounds of
the carnivorous.

He’s quite bright and does
not try to blend in.

Lions and turkeys and
deer on campus.

School high on a hill
above and beyond,

chose a mascot to
unify school pride,

so everyone could feel
they belong.

Lions and turkeys and
deer on campus.

The Banana Slug
became that symbol.

A familiar sight
after a good rain.

He’s quite bright and does
not try to blend in.

Maybe that explains
why they all like him.
